Stags end season with a win, spoil Oxy’s SCIAC Tournament hopes
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags end the 2014 season with a 3-1 win over Occidental on Tuesday afternoon at Arce Field. With the win, CMS spoiled Oxy's post season hopes at being the fourth place seed in the upcoming SCIAC Tournament. The Stags pitching staff held the Tigers to seven scattered hits while the offense strung singles and doubles together in an inning to earn the win.
Sophomore starter Samuel Woodman gave up a pair of hits and a run in the first inning and then settled down to pitch six consecutive shutout innings. Sophomore Clayton Brock, in his third relief effort on the season, forced three fly outs for a necessary shut down inning in the eighth. Finally, to close it out, senior Chad Hadzinsky ended the game and the season with a looking strike out following a spectacular diving catch by junior centerfielder Michael Gose.
CMS scored all three of their runs in the third inning starting with senior Ray Hurwitz getting on with a leadoff single. Another senior, Scott Witte, was hit by a pitch before Gose came up big with a double down the left field line. Sophomore Mackenzie Menthen made it look easy with a one out single to shallow right center. The third and final run scored off a double by senior Michael Erb, driving in Gose.
Devon DeRaad drove in Occidental's only run in the top of the first inning with a double down the left field line.
The Stags finish 15-24 overall, 11-17 in conference, more than doubling their conference wins from the previous season. With the win over Whittier on Sunday, the Stags beat each SCIAC team at least once during the season. The Stags graduate six seniors: Hurwitz, Scott Witte, Hadzinsky, Erb, Andor Kesselman and Yoni Hendel.
