Grodahl, Defense Step Up In 65-58 Win Over Rival Pomona-Pitzer
CLAREMONT, Calif. - On a night when the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team struggled at times offensively, sophomore G Jack Grodahl provided a needed spark off the bench as he scored 28 points in a 65-58 win over rival Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday night at Ducey Gymnasium.
Pomona-Pitzer (11-6, 6-3) led for much of the first half but three-straight baskets by Grodahl, including two three-pointers, gave CMS a 30-24 lead with 4:40 left in the first half, and the team would not trail again. CMS built its lead to as many as eight points in the first half and led 38-33 at halftime. Grodahl had 20 of his game-high 28 points in the first half as he connected on all six of his three-point attempts.
While hot shooting from the three-point line gave CMS (13-5, 9-1) a first half advantage, its defense kept the lead in the second half holding Pomona-Pitzer to 30 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes. CMS led by as many as 10 points on several occasions in the second half and each time Pomona-Pitzer narrowed the lead back to single-digits.
With 3:52 remaining in the game and a 57-52 lead, freshman C Shelby Lane scored and then junior G Remy Pinson followed with a deep three-pointer as the shot clock expired. Pinson's shot put CMS back ahead by 10 points with 2:21 remaining and sealed the win for CMS.
Guard Kyle McAndrews led the way for Pomona-Pitzer with 22 points. For CMS, senior G Cody Mivshek and Lane joined Grodahl in double-figure scoring with 11 points and 10 points, respectively. Grodahl also had a team-high seven rebounds along with freshman G Jack Earley, while Lane added six boards.
CMS hits the road on Saturday for a game at Whittier at 7 p.m. Pomona-Pitzer and CMS play at least one more time this season with the next game slated for Feb. 13 at Pomona-Pitzer.
