CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team beat the Caltech Beavers 75-50 on Saturday night in Ducey Gym. With the win the Stags remain undefeated in SCIAC play.
CMS took the lead early in the first half and did not look back. Tyler Gaffaney had an impressive team- and season-high 28 points for the night. He was 12-15 in the field including hitting four-three point baskets and playing all but five minutes of the game.
Despite coming into the game with a 0-6 SCIAC record, the Caltech men fought hard kept the game close for most of the first half. At halftime, the Stags had a 35-22 lead.
Part way through the second half, CMS broke away and scored eight unanswered points increasing the score from 45-30 to 53-30. Each of Jason Harrington, Richard Harris, Jack Grodahl and Gaffaney contributed to this run. Eric Van Wart hit every shot he took for the night including one basket from the field and draining two foul shots.
At the end of 40 minutes of play, the Stags had a 75-50 lead, soundly securing the win.
For the Beavers, Andrew Hogue had a team-high 11 points and also recorded six rebounds.
CMS is now 6-0 in conference, alone at the top of the standings. The Stags travel to Redlands next Saturday, Jan 25 to play Redlands, a SCIAC rival, at 5 pm.
