CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team's first home game of the season, the Stags beat San Diego Christian College 69-53. After going 1-1 in the All-Engineers Classic in Milwaukee, Wis. the Stags better their record to 2-1 as they hand SDCC their first loss of the season, dropping them to 3-1.

The 2014-15 season marks the first year of transition for the men's and women's basketball programs as Roberts Pavilion is built over Ducey Gym's footprint. The Stags will play all their home contests in Pomona-Pitzer's Rains Center for the next two seasons during the construction.

In the home-opener, CMS pushed the tempo of the game requiring the Hawks, who substituted far less, to keep up. Returning SCIAC Athlete of the Year from the 2013-14 season, Tyler Gaffaney (GCU) did not disappoint. Gaffaney put up his first double-double for the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds, all defensive and eight of which were in the second half.

Gaffaney was only outscored by junior Shelby Lane (CMC) with 18 points on the night. Lane led the team after the first half with 11 points already, going 5-5 from the field. In the entire game, Lane only missed one basket for 89% shooting.

For the Hawks, Peter Beale-Wirsing led all players with 19 points in the game. Beale-Wirsing also added seven rebounds while teammate Rafael Rodriguez drained two threes.

The Stags out-rebounded the Hawks 34-18 led by Gaffaney with eight, followed closely by sophomore Grayson Gunner (CMC) who had five in just 11 minutes of play. Junior Jason Harrington (CMC) was 3-5 from the field but nailed all four attempts from the foul line to add up to ten points for CMS.

CMS also had contributions from the only rookie who got on the floor, Mike Scarlett (CMC). Scarlett hit a big three pointer in the second half to put the Stags up 43-32.

The Stags next face Trinity (TX) (0-2) for the second home game on Friday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Rains Center.
