West Cup Invite Ends For CMS In Tie For First With La Verne
JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. – Similar to the last two tournaments, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team and La Verne found themselves toward the top of the team standings. La Verne finished ahead of CMS in both the Collegiate Invitational and the SCIAC #1 tournament, but at the West Cup Invitational, CMS and La Verne ended up even, each with a three-round score of plus-28 at the two-day invitational held March 25-26 at Goose Creek Golf Club.
The Stags led after the first round with a score 288, one shot ahead of Whitworth and Southwestern. Freshman Kethan Reddy led CMS in the first round with an even-par, 71. The second round saw CMS drop off a bit as a team with a score of 295 which dropped the team from first to third. Despite the team drop-off, junior Bradley Shigezawa and freshman Justin Beck each shot a 4-under, 67 in the second round which were their best rounds of the tournament and the second lowest individual scores of the field in one round. Only tournament winner David Gazzolo of UC Riverside had a lower single-round score, a 66, and that was in the second round as well.
The final round saw CMS shoot a 297 which was the best score of the round, one shot ahead of La Verne which gave CMS the first-place tie with La Verne.
Shigezawa finished the tournament with a score of 5-under, 208, just one shot behind Gazzolo. Beck also finished in the top-10 in a tie for sixth at 1-over, 214. CMS was the only team that had two golfers finish in the top-10.
