Sophomores lead the way as Stags finish in second at West Cup Invite
MURRIETA, Calif. – In the 18-team West Cup Invitational, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team earned a second place finish at the two-day event, March 24-25 at the par-72 Bear Creek Golf Course. CMS had five golfers compete during the Invitational which featured Division III schools from Washington, Oregon, Texas, Minnesota, Virginia and California.
The Stags had a three-day team score of 912, eight shots off the pace set by Redlands (904) who won the team event and also had the top individual finisher in Bobby Holden. La Verne (913), Southwestern (923) and Cal Lutheran (931) rounded out the top-five teams at the event.
CMS and Redlands were tied in first place after the first round of competition with a score of 297. The second round proved to be the difference maker as Redlands outshot CMS by 13 strokes (294 to 307) to take the lead. In the third and final round, CMS shot a 308 and made up five shots on Redlands to finish in second place.
Stag sophomore Justin Beck led the team and finished in second place overall with a three-round score of 219 at 3-over par, four shots behind Redlands' Holden who won the event. Beck's first round score of 3-under, 69 tied Holden for the low round of the Invitational. Beck also shot an even-par 72 in the final round.
Sophomore Kethan Reddy (229) tied for 11th overall while junior Ben Ho (231) tied for 17th, senior Jordan Stein (233) tied for 23rd and senior Patrick Fujieki (260) tied for 79th to round out the field for the Stags. Reddy had the third lowest round for CMS at 1-over 73 in the first round and Ho had a 2-over 74, also in the first round.
Next up for the Stags is the SCIAC #2 Tournament at Empire Lakes Golf Course on April 5-6.
