RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. – Sophomores Justin Beck and Kethan Reddy finished in second and third place, respectively, at the 36-hole SCIAC #2 Tournament on April 5-6 at Empire Lakes Golf Course, while the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team finished in second place in the eight-team event. La Verne (568) edged out CMS (579) by 11 strokes for the tournament win while Cal Lutheran (596), Redlands (602) and Chapman (613) rounded out the top five teams.
After the first day, La Verne held a four shot lead (277 to 281) over CMS. La Verne then extended its lead by seven strokes in the second round as La Verne shot a 291 in the second round and CMS shot a 298. La Verne's rounds of 277 and 291 were the low rounds of the tournament.
While La Verne won by 11 strokes, the competition for the top individual spot was much closer as the top three spots were separated by two strokes. Kelby Scharmann of La Verne finished in first with a two-round score of 6-under par at 138, while Beck (139) finished in second place and Reddy (140) finished in third at 4-under par. Beck shot a 68 in the first round and a 71 in the second round while Reddy shot a tournament low round of 65 in the first round and a 75 in the second round.
Senior Jordan Stein (149) also finished in the top-10 in a tie for 8th place at 5-over par. Junior Ben Ho (151) tied for 16th, sophomore Ahmed El Tamami (157) tied for 24th and senior Robbie Garcia (158) tied for 27th for CMS in the 47 man field.
Next up for the Stags is the Baldy Shootout at Upland Hills Golf Course on April 12. After two SCIAC Tournaments, heading into the SCIAC Golf Championships April 27-29 at Oak Valley Golf Course, the Stags are second in the conference, one shot behind La Verne.
