PRESCOTT, Ariz. – Five members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team represented CMS at the Embry-Riddle Invitational Golf Tournament in Prescott, AZ over the weekend. The Stags came in second place to a familiar foe, CS San Marcos, but narrowed the score differential to just six strokes, improving on the 19 stroke difference from the Cal Cup Tournament the previous weekend.
The same five Stags who competed at the Cal Cup tournament made up the team that traveled to Ariz.
Inclement weather made Talking Rock Golf Course more challenging over the weekend. The practice round on Saturday was canceled due to a lightning storm which caused soggy conditions for Sunday. On Monday, both the weather and scores improved for the Stags who collectively dropped 11 strokes off the team score for the day.
Junior Kethan Reddy led CMS with rounds of 71, 75 and 70 and was the second place finisher of all individuals in the field of 39. As the lone upperclassman, Reddy remained the even-keeled leader for his four freshmen teammates.
Four of the five Stags finished in the top ten in the tournament. Freshman Jonathan Shaw shot 220 over the three rounds. Tim de Silva came in just behind Shaw with a 223 and was followed closely by Matt Shuman with 224. Joe LaHorgue rounded out the team with 231.
After the two fall tournaments CMS leads NCAA Division III teams in Golf Stat's Freshmen Class Impact Ranking. The Stag freshmen make up four of the five team members who have competed and they have an average score of 74.13. The rankings can be found here.
This tournament marks the end of the Stags' fall season. Their first tournament in the spring is Feb. 2-3 at the CS San Marcos Cougar Invitational.
