CHINO HILLS, Calif. – In the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s golf team’s final tune-up before the SCIAC Championships at the end of the month, CMS finished in third place at the SCIAC #2 Tournament, April 11-12 at Los Serranos Country Club. The Stags finished with a two-round score of a 4-over par 580 on the par-72 course, seven strokes behind team champion Redlands who shot a 573.
La Verne (578) finished two shots ahead of CMS for second while California Lutheran (586), Occidental (612), Chapman (615), Pomona-Pitzer (620) and Whittier (643) rounded out the field.
With three rounds to go before the conference champion is decided, the standings are incredibly close between the top four teams. Through four rounds of play and two SCIAC Tournaments, Redlands has averaged a 293, while La Verne is in second (300.50), CMS is in third (300.75) and Cal Lu is in fourth (301.75). The SCIAC Championships run from April 26-28 in Beaumont, Calif. at Oak Valley Golf Course.
Freshman Jonathan Shaw (CMC) led the way for CMS at the SCIAC #2 Tournament as he finished in fourth place with a 2-under, 142. Shaw put together a consistent performance with rounds of 71 each day. Cal Lu’s Keegan Sheard was the individual medalist at 8-under overall, carried by his opening round of 63. Shaw finished one shot out of third place.
In addition to Shaw, CMS had two other golfers in the top-10. Freshman Matt Shuman (CMC) finished in a tie for seventh (145) while junior Kethan Reddy (CMC) finished in ninth, two shots behind Shuman with a 3-over, 147. Shuman jumped Reddy in the final round with a 73 while Reddy posted a 76.
Freshman Johnny Brandt (CMC) had a strong second round and moved up four spots for a tie for 14th overall with a 5-over, 149. Junior Justin Beck (CMC) tied for 18th and senior Ben Ho (CMC) ended his weekend in 22nd.
