Stags Advance To Tournament Final With Overtime Win Over Poets

Alex Lichtenberg (JR, Beverly Hills) drilled home a shot from the top of the box midway through the first overtime to give CMS a 1-0 victory over Whittier in the SCIAC Tournament Semifinals.  CMS (13-3-2) will play at Redlands (13-2-2) in the final on Saturday at 7:00 PM.  The game is a rematch of last year's final which CMS won at Redlands 2-1.

Both team's had excellent chances to score in regulation.  CMS keeper Joe Swartley (SR, Monte Sereno) pushed a shot wide with five seconds remaining in the first half and Whittier keeper David Diaz pushed a shot over the crossbar midway through the second half.  There were plenty of shots by both teams (CMS-18, Whittier-19), but only twelve shots on goal, six by each team.  The game was also physical with the teams combining for 37 fouls.

The game winner was assisted by Christian Paulin (JR, Palos Verdes) and Eric Bean (JR, Waukee, IA).  Paulin played the ball out of the back to Bean who laid it off to Lichtenberg.  Lichtenberg calmly cut the ball back past a sliding defender and then buried his shot in the back corner for his second game winning goal of the season.

CMS finished their home campaign 9-0-1 and did not allow a goal on their home field.

CMS and Redlands have met twice this season.  The teams tied 1-1 at Redlands on September 25 and CMS won at home 1-0 on October 20.
