Record breaking effort earns Stag swimmer Williams SCIAC Athlete of the Week
PASADENA, Calif. – The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) named Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimmer Matthew Williams as the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week for the week of Dec. 2-8.
Swimming in the cold and rain, Williams set the CMS record in the 100-yard backstroke while leading off the winning 400-yard medley relay in CMS' double-dual against Chapman and Whittier. He swam 49.86 to demolish the old record by 0.73 seconds. He is the third SCIAC swimmer to break 50 seconds and the first to do so prior to championship competition. He also had the No. 3 CMS and No. 5 SCIAC time in the 200-yard backstroke (1:50.54) and the fastest 50 second split (21.37) of any competitor in the 200-yard freestyle relay as his team won in 1:26.82. Both of his back times are NCAA 'B' cuts.
