CMS Stags Tennis added two more 9-0 victories over Caltech and Westmont on Saturday to conclude a four match sweep. The win against Caltech puts the Stags at 3-0 in the SCIAC and extends their conference winning streak to twenty-four (24) matches, while the victory over Westmont is their second against an NAIA opponent this season.
Junior Jonathan Solomon (Steamboat Springs, CO [pictured right]) returned to action for the first time in over a year to lead the Stags at #6 singles and #3 doubles in the opening match against Caltech. Solomon and partner Russell Chidester (Jr - Austin, TX) were 8-0 winners at #3 to get CMS on the scoreboard first. After winning 8-2 at #1 and #2 doubles the Stags took a commanding 3-0 lead going into the singles. Sophomores Myles Crandall (Tucson, AZ) and Mathias Mondino (Westport, CT) provided the match clinching singles victories at #2 and #5 respectively by only dropping one game between them.
Playing In front of a lively Parents Weekend crowd, the Stags came out aggressively in the doubles to record a convincing sweep. Number three pair Mikey Lim (Honolulu, HI) and Mike Starr (San Ramon, CA) were one game away from their second straight shutout before getting an 8-1 win and putting CMS up for good. In the singles however, Lim was challenged at #1 singles, and needed a come from behind effort to force a match tie-break and then come back again from a 5-2 deficit in the match tie-break. At #2 singles, junior Lawrence Wang (Orange, CA) similarly forced a match tie-break after losing the first set and winning the second. Wang was a decisive 10-2 winner in his match tie-break. Elsewhere at singles positions three through six, CMS earned straight set wins behind the solid play of their starters.
After winning thirty-six (36) individual matches in just over twenty-four hours, the Stags are now 6-3 overall. Next Saturday CMS travels to Whittier and then plays 18th ranked Washington & Lee at home.
