Sophomore Robbie Erani (New York, NY) won the Wilson / ITA Division III West Region singles title on Sunday, defeating top seeded Andrew Giuffrida of Cal Lutheran 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in the final. Erani advances to the ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile, AL October 15-18 and earns ITA All-American honors for his title.
Erani’s title marks the third time in four years that CMS has won the singles at the ITA West Regional, with Mikey Lim (Sr. – Honolulu, HI), and Mike Starr (Sr. – San Ramon, CA) winning in 2007 and 2006 respectively. A year ago, Erani was the Stags’ lone singles semifinalist as a freshman. This year Lim joined him in the other semifinal. Stags freshman Alex Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA) became the third Stag to reach the quarlterfinals, and was the only unseeded player in the field to do so.
Erani also had an outstanding doubles run in the tournament, reaching the final with partner Ronald Wu (Jr. - Los Altos, CA). Erani and Wu held two set points in the second set tie-break before losing a tough 7-5, 7-6(6) decision to second seeded Brian Pybas and Marc Vartabedian from UC Santa Cruz. Other tournament highlights for the Stags included: sophomore Victor Chien (Diamond Bar, CA) winning the 1st round consolation singles draw, freshman Mac Cahill (Southport, CT) reaching the final of the 2nd round consolation singles draw, seniors Eric and Spencer MacColl (Greenbrae, CA) winning five matches to capture the 1st round consolation doubles draw, and Cahill and Brandon Wei (So. – Lake Oswego, OR), winning the 2nd round consolation doubles draw.
The Stags had three teams advance to the doubles quarters and two teams in the semis.
