Stags Strong in Ojai, Reach Singles and Doubles Finals
Senior Alex Lane (Claremont, CA) and sophomores Warren Wood (Del Mar, CA) and Joe Dorn (Washington D.C.) reached the singles and doubles finals respectively of the 113th Ojai Valley Tournament which concluded on Sunday. It was Lane's third consecutive Ojai final, having won the singles title in 2011 and the doubles title in 2012 (with partner Robbie Erani), while Wood and Dorn were making their first appearance in an Ojai final.
CMS had one of its most impressive team showings at the Ojai Valley Tournament in recent history, with five Stags advancing to the singles quarterfinals, two to the semis, and one to the championship match. In doubles, CMS' #1 and #3 teams advanced to the quarterfinals, with Wood and Dorn moving on to the final and strengthening their position as one of the top doubles tandems in the West Region. Lane was attempting to be the first Stags Tennis Player to win an Ojai singles or doubles title for the second time. He and Larry Wang (CMC '09) are the only players in Stags Tennis history to win both the singles and doubles titles at Ojai.
Lane's road to his second Ojai singles final in three years included wins over UC Santa Cruz's #3 Bryce Bettwy, Chapman's #2 Kyle Coates, Willamette's #1 Josh Wong, teammate and CMS #1 Warren Wood, and Redlands' #1 Pat Lipscomb. Singles champion Nick Ballou from Cal Lutheran defeated Lane in the title match, Stags #3 Nikolas Marino (So. - San Diego, CA) in the semis, and junior captain Neel Kotrappa (La Verne, CA) in the quarters. In reaching the semis, Marino had wins over Santa Cruz's #1 Erich Koenig and Whittier's #1 Julian Seneviratne. Stags #5 Skyler Butts (Fr. - Santa Ana, CA), who advanced to the singles quarters with Wood and Kotrappa, had noteworthy wins over Santa Cruz's #3 Andre Halabi and Cal Lutheran's #2 Ray Worley.
CMS resumes dual match play this week at the SCIAC tournament. As top seed in the eight team tournament hosted by Whittier College, CMS will open up against 8th seed Caltech on Friday at 9:30 AM. In second round action, CMS will face either fourth seed Whiiter or fifth seed Pomona-Pitzer on Friday at 2:00 PM.
