CMS Water Polo Loses to UCSD, But Cruises Past Cal Tech
This week, CMS (12-11, 4-2 SCIAC) has two back to back games, beginning with a loss in San Diego to #11 UCSD, 6-11, and an easy win over Cal Tech 20-7.
The week began with an away game at UCSD on Tuesday. CMS came onto the pool deck with complete confidence, knowing they could handle the Tritons under the lights, but came out flat, as UCSD took an early 4-0 lead. After much frustration on the Maroon and Gold bench, Brian Baier (SO, Orinda) drove in from the wing and put one past the Triton keeper to put CMS on the board. Down 1-5 at the quarter, CMS formed a new plan, and began their comeback. After another goal by Baier and one from Brian Chong (JR, Mercer Island, WA), the Stags came out of the second quarter only down three, with the score 3-6. CMS fought hard the third quarter, as they managed to work their system, drawing multiple ejections and 5-meter penalties, while John Holland (FR, Orinda) managed to convert two and Chong put away his second of the day. Unfortunately, despite only a 6-8 deficit going into the fourth, the Stags could not keep up with the Tritons in the final quarter of play, as they were held scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Stags walked away frustrated with the 6-11 loss, knowing had they played within their system more, the end result would have been different. Baier, Chong, and Holland each scored two in the loss, while Sean Wasserman (SR, Los Gatos) recorded nine saves.
CMS came back fired up against CalTech the next Wednesday, as they took on the Beavers in a SCIAC matchup. CMS scored early on a rebound shot by Maarten Lefor (FR, Sherman Oaks), and never looked back, handling the Beavers easily 20-7. Twelve different Stags recorded goals in the game, as Danny Polyakov (JR, Agoura Hills) [pictured] led the team with four, while Jonah Chodosh (JR, Manhatten Beach) posted a hat trick.
The Stags return to SCIAC action as they take on Cal Lu, the number two team in the conference, Saturday at 11am. Later the same day, at 6pm, the Stags take on #19 Air Force. Both games are at Axelrood pool. Come support the Stags!
