In the final poll of the 2011 season, a panel of coaches from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA), and Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) voted the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Men's Water Polo team the top team in the country in the Division III polls. This gives the Stags the rights to the unofficial champions' title and gives them the top spot until the preseason polls are released for the 2012 season.
In a high-intensity battle at the La Verne Aquatic Center, CMS was edged by Pomona-Pitzer. 4-7, in the SCIAC championship game. This loss set CMS back several points in the polls. The following weekend, however, at the WWPA Championships hosted by UCSD, CMS had an opportunity in the third round to avenge their loss the previous weekend, as they squared off against PP in the 5-8 semis. CMS won the game in a late-night overtime thriller, which eventually gave them a 6th place finish at the WWPA Championships. The following week, the final polls of the season were revealed, as CMS barely edged out P-P for the top spot, 98-97.
