2011 Season In Review

2011 Season In Review

The 2011 CMS Softball season began on the heels of the most successful season in program history.  In 2010, CMS won its first SCIAC Championship in 11 years, set a new record for wins, and won its first game at the NCAA National Championship Tournament ever.

Tough though it would be, the Athenas were committed to improving their results in 2011, even if only incrementally.

Months of 6am weight training, afternoon practices and 47 games later, the Athenas captured their second SCIAC Championship (back-to-back), broke their own record for wins and won their first elimination game at the NCAA Tournament defeating the #3 ranked, reigning 2010 national champions.

The Athenas say goodbye to 20 years of CMS Softball experience as they bid farewell to graduating seniors:  Chelsea Baker, Michelle Harvey, Kara Mantani, Gizelle Pera and Katerina Yale.

They become part of the CMS Softball Alumni family as they pursue careers in the U.S. Army, Vanderbilt Graduate School, PhD studies in Physical Therapy, UCLA Dental School and Medical School Fall 2012 respectively.

Looking towards 2012 CMS Softball, the Athenas return a remarkable core of veterans led by former All-American Harmony Palmer; ALL SCIAC awardees: Amanda Banducci, Emily Lopez, Megan Morris, Rebecca Gularte and Emma Friedenberg.  Senior Rebecca King will return to the field after sitting out her junior year with a torn ACL.

The seasoned nucleus of returners will be joined by an outstanding group of newcomers and transfers, several of whom promise to break into starting roles and make an immediate impact.

Building on back-to-back SCIAC Championships, the Athenas will set their sights higher than ever.  And with the addition of a smashing new scoreboard in right field, CMS Softball promises to be more exciting than ever in 2012.
