CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team gets its 2013 campaign started on Friday, Feb. 1 at home vs. Azusa Pacific University. The Athenas are coming off a 30-15 season in 2012 including a fourth-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament where they lost in the NCAA Regionals to Texas-Tyler.
With several returners including a pair of NFCA All-West Region selections, to go along with 10 newcomers, the expectations are once again high. The Athenas enter the season with a No. 22 ranking in the NFCA preseason polls.
Among the top returners for CMS are senior IF Harmony Palmer (.349, 13 doubles, 31 RBI) and junior IF/OF Megan Latta (.312, 12 RBI) along with sophomore pitcher Hayley Schultz (18-12, 1.76 ERA). Palmer as a freshman was the program's only first team All-American.
In addition to a tough SCIAC schedule, the Athenas have games against several top Division III and NAIA foes. CMS hosts preseason NAIA No. 1 Cal State San Marcos and also has several games against Division III top-25 competition at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Georgia and in SCIAC play.
