Concordia Takes Two From Athenas
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team lost its doubleheader to NAIA foe Concordia University Irvine Saturday at Athena Field. The Athenas lost the first game 5-0 and then dropped the second game 6-3 to Concordia, who came in ranked fifth overall in the NAIA preseason poll. After today, CMS is now 1-2 overall.
Game 1: Concordia 5, CMS 0
The first game began with a pitching duel early between freshman Molly Rubidoux, making her debut for the Athenas on the mound, and Concordia's Katie Cotta. Rubidoux gave up only four hits in four innings of work. However, with a 1-0 lead in the fifth, Concordia was able to push across four more runs, which proved to be enough for the Eagles.
Marie Bradvica and Harmony Palmer each had hits for the Athenas.
Freshman pitcher Shannon O'Neill made her collegiate debut in the first game. O'Neill appeared in relief in both games and tallied seven strikeouts over six innings of work while allowing just four runs.
Game 2: Concordia 6, CMS 3
The second game saw the Athenas take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second, starting with a single by Palmer who stole second and came all the way home on an errant throw from the Eagles' catcher. Later in the inning, Janelle Shiozaki's bases loaded single brought in Morgan Beltz. Bradvica, with the bases loaded again, was hit by a pitch to bring in Tara Robinson.
The Eagles would eventually take back the lead for good in the top of the fifth with three runs.
The Athenas are back in action next Saturday, Feb. 9 with a doubleheader against Cal State San Marcos at Athena Field at 12:00 p.m.
