Athenas Stay Hot At The Plate, Take Two From La Verne
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team played host in conference doubleheader action against the University of La Verne Leopards, Friday March 15, on Athena Field. The Athenas swept the Leopards, winning game one of the twin bill 9-1 and game two 8-0. CMS is now 13-6 overall and in third place at 6-2 in SCIAC.
Game 1: CMS 9, University of La Verne 1 (6 Innings)
Game one started with the Leopards getting on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, to take the early 1-0 lead. The Athenas responded with a run of their own to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning. The Athenas didn't stop there scoring four more runs in the second inning to keep the pressure on the Leopards and take a 5-1 lead. Senior IF Harmony Palmer had a two-run single up the middle to highlight the inning, as three of the four runs scored by CMS were unearned against La Verne P Katherine Kibbe.
The Athenas were able to tally on four more runs with one in the third and three in the sixth, including a run on what ended up being the game-ending single by junior Megan Latta who went 2-for-4 in the game.
CMS, behind sophomore P Hayley Schultz, allowed only the one run in the first inning. Behind some great defense, Schultz was able to go six strong innings, giving up one run on six hits with five strikeouts.
Freshman OF Janelle Shiozaki had a strong game at the plate going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Palmer also had a good showing at the dish, going 2-for-3 and three RBI. Freshman IF Katie Savard also had two hits.
Game 2: CMS 8, University of La Verne 0 (5 Innings)
Game two started out as a pitcher's duel between CMS freshman P Shannon O'Neill and the Leopards' Rachel Hong. The Athenas put up a three spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning and never looked back. Sophomore Marie Bradvica had a two-run single in the inning to give CMS a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, CMS scored all five of its runs with two outs. Bradvica came through again, this time with a bases clearing, three-run double to right field that pushed the score to 7-0. The Athenas added their final run of the inning and game on a single by freshman IF Mikayla O'Neal.
O'Neill, (3-1) gave the Athenas five strong innings of work for her second shutout of the season and allowed six hits and two strikeouts.
The Athenas scored eight runs on eight hits and were led by Bradvica who had a season-high five RBI and two hits. Palmer added two hits and two runs scored. Savard went 1-for-2 with 2 RBI.
The Athenas next play a doubleheader at Occidental College, Saturday, March 16, starting at 12:00 p.m.
