CLAREMONT, Calif. –The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball beat Occidental College 17-2 and 14-2 in the final regular season games of the season. The Athenas' offense broke out with 37 hits to score 31 runs during the two games. Sophomore Tara Robinson led the team going 7-for-8 at the plate including a triple while freshman Andrea Jewett earned her first win on the season.
In the first game, CMS' ace Hayley Schultz started the game but quickly turned it over to sophomore Molly Rubidoux who had a strong outing and pitched three innings for the win. Jewett came in to close in the sixth inning and snagged a comeback line drive for the final out.
In game one, all nine Athena batters had at least one hit and the team had four doubles, two off sophomore Katie Savard's bat.
Sophomore Carlene Roberts' grand slam in the top of the second inning highlighted the Athenas' offensive onslaught. Roberts' only homer last year was over Occidental's fence.
All four Athena pitchers saw time in the circle as freshman Kaylilani Minami finished off the second game.
Occidental's Alex Battest had two hits including a double and an RBI in the first game.
The Athenas secured a second place finish in SCIAC with a 20-8 record in conference play. CMS plays the No. 3 seed Chapman in the first round of the SCIAC Tournament beginning May 2. The tournament will be held at No. 1 seed Redlands on Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3. The winner of the tournament earns the automatic qualification to the NCAA Tournament. More details to come.
