MARSHALL, Texas - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Softball team went ahead early in the first game of the best two-out-of-three series but then let ETBU back into the game ultimately giving the Tigers the opportunity to win it in the end 6-4. The Athenas, now down 0-1, need to win two games on Saturday to advance to the Division III World Series.

CMS put together a rally in the third inning, loading the bases for sophomore Katie Savard on hits by sophomores Shannon O'Neill and Janelle Shiozaki with Brooklyn Robinson drawing a walk. As the cleanup hitter, Savard has been clutch all year and tonight proved to be no different. With two outs, and the runners going on the pitch, Savard blasted a double off the wall in left center to clear the bases and scored herself off an errant throw by the shortstop.

The Athenas held onto the 4-0 lead for two more defensive halves. Until the fifth inning, junior pitcher Hayley Schultz had scattered just three hits and kept the Tigers at bay. In the fifth, CMS collectively lost some composure and ETBU tied up the score with unearned runs due to walks, hit batters and a passed ball. Freshman Kaylilani Minami came in to limit the damage and recorded a strikeout the third out to strand three runners.

The Tigers' rally threw a wrench in the Athenas' momentum and CMS was unable to recover.

ETBU brought in Kelly Jo McLendon in relief for starter Shelby Parker in the fifth. McLendon limited CMS to just one hit for the rest of the game as the score remained locked in a 4-4 tie through the regulation seven innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, leadoff hitter Jayme Perez launched a ball out over the left center fence for a two-run walk-off homer and her sixth blast in the postseason.

Box Score

CMS (31-14) and ETBU (43-7) face off again at Taylor Field in Marshall, TX at 2 p.m. CDT with the if necessary game immediately following.
