Softball finishes in top-25 for Academic Team Honors from NFCA
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team recorded a 3.501 grade point average in the 2015-16 academic year and earned recognition from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) as a Division III All-Academic Team.

End of the Year Awards for CMS
It has been another outstanding year for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletics. On the largest scale, CMS broke into the top-10 in the Division III Learfield Directors’ Cup. During the 2015-16 year, many of the CMS student athletes were honored for their athletic and academic achievements.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was represented by 201 student-athletes on the 2015-16 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) All-Academic Team. The SCIAC recognizes student-athletes who have achieved at least a cumulative 3.4 grade point average and completed one full year at their institution.

CMS breaks into top-10 in DIII Directors’ Cup standings
In the 2015-16 school year, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps broke into the top-10 in the Division III Learfield Directors’ Cup standings for the first time in program history with a tie for tenth place nationally. The final results were released by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) on June 9.

Gurr earns NFCA All-American honors
Sophomore pitcher Anna Gurr (CMC) earned All-American Third Team honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) at the banquet in Salem, Va. on the evening of May 25. Gurr is the third athlete from the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball program to receive this award.

Athenas lose a heart breaker after battling in NCAA Tournament
“The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat” perfectly described the day of softball for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday. The Athenas won the first game against the previously unbeaten Linfield Wildcats 3-0. This win forced the “if necessary” championship game against Linfield again in the NCAA Spokane Regional. In a dramatic and emotional back-and-forth game, CMS ultimately fell in a 6-5 heartbreaker in eight innings.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team stayed alive through two elimination games on Saturday in the NCAA tournament beating Whitworth 3-0 and then George Fox 3-1 in a rematch of yesterday’s game. Sophomore Anna Gurr (CMC) earned both wins as the team recorded its 19th shutout of the season.

Late rally not enough for CMS vs. George Fox in NCAA Regional
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team came up short, losing 5-2 to George Fox in the first game of the Spokane Regional in the NCAA Tournament. This marks George Fox’s first ever NCAA appearance and win. With the loss, the Athenas are sent to the bottom half of the bracket to face the host school, Whitworth, in an elimination game tomorrow, May 14 at 1:30 p.m. In the double-elimination tournament, CMS can still vie for a regional championship in the days to come.

Softball NCAA Regional preview
After winning the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team earned an automatic qualification to the NCAA Tournament. The Athenas were sent, along with Linfield and George Fox to Spokane, Wash. for a four-team regional hosted by Whitworth. Consistent with the NCAA’s regional rankings, CMS earned the No. 1 seed followed by No. 2 Whitworth, No. 3 Linfield, and No. 4 George Fox.

The senior catcher from Yorba Linda, Carlene Roberts, hit three home runs in the first day of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament and finished the weekend hitting .667, slugging an outrageous 2.167 and recording a team-leading six RBI.

In the NCAA Selection Show on Monday morning, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team learned they are headed to Whitworth University in Spokane, Wash. to face George Fox University in the NCAA Regional. The NCAA released the field of 62 teams that were divided into 14 four-team regionals and two three-team regionals.

Athenas win program’s fourth SCIAC Tournament Championship
After two convincing wins yesterday, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team was primed for a rematch with the University of La Verne for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament title. In front of a large crowd and in championship atmosphere, the Athenas delivered and won the program’s fourth tournament championship in five years with the 4-2 victory over the Leopards.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team won both games in the first day of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament in decisive fashion beating Redlands 9-1 and La Verne 10-1 (both in five innings). Staying in the top half of the bracket, CMS advances to the championship game tomorrow, May 7 at 1:30 p.m. Senior Carlene Roberts (CMC) had the best day of her career with three home runs and five RBI over both games.

Softball SCIAC Tournament Preview
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team earned the No. 2 seed going into the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament with a 24-4 record during regular season play. The University of La Verne posted a 25-3 record for the No. 1 seed and hosting privileges at the Campus West Softball Field. The final two teams to round out the tournament are No. 3 seed Redlands (16-12) and No. 4 seed Whittier (12-16).

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team had seven athletes earning all-conference honors from the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), highlighted by sophomore Anna Gurr (CMC) tabbed as Pitcher of the Year, as announced on May 3. Senior Tara Robinson (CMC) and sophomore Briana Halle (CMC) represented CMS on the First Team and seniors Molly Rubidoux (CMC) and Katie Savard (CMC), sophomore Carly Roleder, and freshman Abigail Metsch (SCR) were voted onto the Second Team.

So when Mondays all of a sudden became the best-attended day of the week for girls between third and sixth grades in a mentoring program at Mountain View Elementary School in Claremont, something extraordinary was happening.

Before the game, head coach Betsy Hipple honored the six graduating seniors: Shannon O’Neill (CMC), Carlene Roberts (CMC), Tara Robinson (CMC), Molly Rubidoux (CMC), Katie Savard (CMC) and Janelle Shiozaki (CMC). The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team came back to win the second game of the home-opening double header against Vanguard University on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Athenas in top 25 All-Academic teams released by NFCA
During the 2013-14 season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Softball team had a 3.419 average GPA earning a top 25 finish for all NCAA Division III softball teams. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) additionally released the 2014 All-American Scholar Athletes. The Athenas were respresented by eight scholar athletes: Hayley Schultz (CMC '15), Andrea Jewett (CMC '17), Melanie Carlson (CMC '17), Brooklyn Robinson (Scripps '16), Megan Latta (CMC '14), Hannah Dunham (CMC '14), Janelle Shiozaki (CMC '16), and Mikayla O'Neal (CMC '16).

CMS loses heartbreaker in NCAA Super Regional Championship
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team fought to the bitter end in the championship game of the NCAA West Region Super Regional. After losing the first game of the series on Friday, the Athenas’ faced elimination from the tournament on Saturday afternoon. CMS heroically won the first game of the day 6-4 to necessitate a third game and then, after leading that game until the seventh inning, gave up a three-run walk-off homer to end the game and season.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Softball team went ahead early in the first game of the best two-out-of-three series but then let ETBU back into the game ultimately giving the Tigers the opportunity to win it in the end 6-4. The Athenas, now down 0-1, need to win two games on Saturday to advance to the Division III World Series.

In their ninth meeting of the season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team beat Redlands 7-2 for the program’s first NCAA Regional title. As the winner of a regional, CMS advances to a Super Regional with the winner of the Tyler Regional for a best two out of three match up. The initial field of 62 teams narrows to just 16 in Super Regionals.

After earning the automatic qualification to the 2014 Division III Softball Championship by winning the SCIAC Postseason Tournament, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team faces Linfield and Redlands in a three team regional hosted by Redlands May 9-10.

CMS captures third consecutive SCIAC Tournament Championship
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team won their third consecutive SCIAC Tournament title beating Redlands 11-0 on Saturday afternoon at Redlands’ “Field of Dreams.” The Athenas entered the second day of the tournament as the only undefeated team after having won both games on Friday against Chapman (6-0) and Redlands (5-4). In the championship game, CMS faced Redlands again as the Bulldogs beat Whittier earlier in the day. Redlands won the first match up with CMS 1-0 to push the tournament to the “if necessary” championship game where the Athenas came out on top to be crowned SCIAC Tournament Champions.

Seven Athenas earn softball All-SCIAC honors
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball landed the most players on the All-SCIAC teams including both Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. Sophomore shortstop Tara Robinson was named as the conference’s Player of the Year as freshman Kaylilani Minami earned the Rookie of the Year award. First Team honors went to junior pitcher Hayley Schultz and sophomore first baseman Katie Savard. Sophomore outfielder Janelle Shiozaki, sophomore second baseman Brooklyn Robinson, and senior catcher Morgan Beltz earned Second Team honors.

Undefeated after first day, Athenas advance to SCIAC Tournament championship game
After the first day of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament hosted by Redlands University, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas remain the only undefeated team. In their first game, No. 2 seed CMS beat No. 3 seed Chapman 6-0. CMS then met No. 1 seed Redlands in the winner-winner matchup and came back for a 5-4 walk-off win.

The top four teams after regular season play compete in the SCIAC Tournament May 2 and 3. Redlands (27-11, 23-5) won the regular season and hosts the double elimination tournament for No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (25-12, 20-8), No. 3 Chapman (24-16, 17-11), and No. 4 Whittier (26-14, 16-12).

Grand slam and 11 doubles for sweep of Oxy
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball beat Occidental College 17-2 and 14-2 in the final regular season games of the season. The Athenas’ offense broke out with 37 hits to score 31 runs during the two games. Sophomore Tara Robinson led the team going 7-for-8 at the plate including a triple while freshman Andrea Jewett earned her first win on the season.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team was 3-1 over the weekend sweeping Cal Lutheran (9-1, 10-7) and then splitting with Pomona-Pitzer (2-1 loss, 8-0 win) on Senior Day. Seniors Morgan Beltz, Hannah Dunham and Megan Latta were recognized as this year’s graduating class before the games against Pomona-Pitzer.

After tough losses the day before, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team rebounded to beat Whittier twice in a Sunday make-up double header. Freshmen Alexa Heydenberk and Cassie Davis were big contributors to the Athenas’ win in the second game while sophomore Janelle Shiozaki doubled to knock in the only CMS score in the first.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team went 5-1 during their three day stay at the Tucson Invitational Games facing teams from Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Athenas beat Augsburg 10-2 (5 innings), Wisconsin Eau Claire 7-4, Marian 9-0 and most notably No. 4 Central College (IA) twice (2-1, 7-0) while dropping a game to Wisconsin La Crosse 6-1. The relentless offensive fire power combined with stellar pitching performances that were backed up with rock solid defense earned the Athenas five hard fought wins.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team went 1-1 against La Verne in Saturday’s home conference double header, winning the first game 2-0 but then falling 5-1 in the second. The Athenas look to improve on their SCIAC record (3-3) with double headers on Friday and Saturday this week against Cal Lutheran and Pomona-Pitzer.

Junior Hayley Schultz and freshman Kaylilani Minami each shut out Chapman in spectacular pitching performances while sophomore Carlene Roberts was the offense's spark plug.

The 2010 and 2011 CMS Softball seasons set successive “best record in CMS Softball history” marks. CMS also won SCIAC Championships in 2010 and 2011. Thus, committing to improve upon the past and take the program where it’s never been before presented a formidable challenge to the 2012 squad. But, once again, the Athenas demonstrated that bold challenges engage their passions and fuel their competitive fires.

The Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning Saturday and then fended off a late rally by UT Tyler to claim a 3-1 win over the Patriots at the Tyler Regional of the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament.

CMS Softball Alumni Weekend a Big Success
The first-ever CMS Softball Alumni game was a big success. Several alumnae arrived on campus Friday night creating excitement as old friends and teammates reconnected. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) today announced their top ten All-Academic Teams for the 2010-11 academic year in all collegiate divisions and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was the sixth best team in NCAA Division III. The Athenas had a 3.512 team GPA for 2010-11.

Athena Softball Excels In The Classroom
Though CMS Softball has garnered attention recently for success on the field, the athletically talented student-athletes excel in the classroom as well. Ten of eighteen student-athletes on the 2010-2011 team were named NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) Scholar-Athletes. The award goes to student-athletes who earn a 3.5 GPA or better for the academic year.

Munoz Is Second Athena Alumni In Three Years To Earn Fulbright
Melissa Munoz earned a Fulbright Award following graduation from Scripps College this spring and will spend the next year working with high school students in Malaysia. Her teammate, Jessica Vaughn '09, taught for a year in Sri Lanka as a Fulbright scholar.

2011 Season In Review
The 2011 CMS Softball season began on the heels of the most successful season in program history. In 2010, CMS won its first SCIAC Championship in 11 years, set a new record for wins, and won its first game at the NCAA National Championship Tournament ever. 2011 provided endless highlights, exhilarating wins, agonizing defeats, belly busting laughs, and precious memories. CMS Finishes 1-2 In Powerhouse Regional
CMS finished 1-2 at the Texas-Tyler Regional of the NCAA Division III Softball Championships. The Athenas, ranked 15th in the nation, lost to #13 Louisiana College 8-3, beat #3 East Texas Baptist University 6-1 and lost to #12 Redlands 6-1. At the conclusion of the tournament, two Athena players, Michelle Harvey and Harmony Palmer were named to the All-Tournament team.

Athenas Win Back-To-Back SCIAC Championships!
In double-header action on Senior Day, Saturday, April 23, the CMS Athenas 32-8 (19-5 SCIAC) bested the Whittier Poets 15-3 (5 inn.) and 8-6 to win their second straight SCIAC Championship. By winning the 2011 Regular Season title, CMS also wins the right to host the 2011 SCIAC Softball Tournament, again, for the second year in a row.

Spring Break 2011 Brings Success and Heartbreak
The CMS Softball team played 12 games in 8 days over Spring Break. The 2011 Spring Break started with a trip to the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida. The rigorous schedule required the team to play 8 games in four days tackling 8 different opponents in daily double-headers. The squad played well and came away with a 7-1 record for the trip.

The CMS Athenas pounded out 23 hits and 22 runs in a dominating win over cross-campus rival Pomona-Pitzer Saturday. Final scores were 10-0 (in five innings) and 12-8. The sweep marked the opening of 2011 SCIAC play and moved the Athenas to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference.

CMS achieved a program milestone on Thursday with their first win in the NCAA Championships. The Athenas beat Central College (IA) 8-4 in the Indianola, IA regional. CMS, the #4 seed in the regional, will face #1 seed Linfield at 4:00 Central on Friday.
