    Offense breaks out for 6-1, 6-0 sweep of CLU The bats of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team were hot on Saturday as the Athenas recorded their second sweep of the 2017 season, beating Cal Lutheran 6-1 and 6-0. The Athenas (10-12, 8-4) put up crooked numbers in five innings on the day while the defense did not allow an earned run for Cal Lu (7-13, 4-8).

    Gurr throws shutout in split at Redlands The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team played two drastically different games on Friday afternoon at the University of Redlands for the SCIAC split. CMS (8-12, 6-4) won the first game 5-0 behind junior pitcher Anna Gurr (CMC) and then dropped the nightcap 6-1.

    Gurr throws no-hitter in split with Whittier At the end of a long week for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team, junior ace Anna Gurr (CMC) still had the legs to throw a no-hitter against Whittier on Saturday afternoon. CMS (7-11, 5-3) and Whittier (10-10, 6-4) split the series with CMS earning the 3-0 win initially with the Poets taking game two, 5-1. The Athenas were dealt a sweep by Ithaca on the day prior, losing 5-0 and 6-3.

    Denison takes Athenas in double header After the high of beating the now No. 1 Berry on Tuesday afternoon, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team (6-8) returned to the diamond the next day to be swept by Denison (7-1), 8-1 and 5-2. The Big Red had just previously swept both Whittier and Pomona-Pitzer in high-scoring affairs and came to CMS ready to hit.

    Walk-off win for CMS hands No. 4 Berry first loss The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team looked to junior ace Anna Gurr (CMC) when the No. 4 team in the country came to town. Berry (19-1) was previously unbeaten and averaged over 8.5 runs per game before matching up with the Athenas (6-6) on Tuesday afternoon. CMS dropped the first game 3-0 due to a pair of early unearned runs but then came back in the second to win in walk-off fashion 2-1.

    Late rally not enough in split with Sagehens Junior Anna Gurr (CMC) earned her fourth win on the season as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team (5-5, 4-2) split with Pomona-Pitzer (5-6, 3-5) on Saturday afternoon. The Athenas took a one-run lead in the first game and then added to it for the eventual 4-2 win. In the second game of the day, the Sagehens broke out for four runs in the first inning and CMS’ late rally was not enough in the 4-2 loss.

    Softball scores seven in split with La Verne For the second SCIAC double header of the season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team (4-4, 3-1) split with the University of La Verne (9-3, 5-1), 3-1 loss and then 7-6 win. The first game showcased the Athenas’ defense and ULV’s pitching while the second game saw each team have three hits for extra bases in the high scoring affair.

    Early season rematch goes to Wildacats In its home opener on Saturday afternoon, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team matched up with the last team it faced in the 2016 season, Linfield. The Athenas scored first in both games and out-hit the Wildcats in game two, but ultimately fell in both with scores of 3-1 and 4-1.

    Softball finishes in top-25 for Academic Team Honors from NFCA The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team recorded a 3.501 grade point average in the 2015-16 academic year and earned recognition from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) as a Division III All-Academic Team.

    End of the Year Awards for CMS It has been another outstanding year for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletics. On the largest scale, CMS broke into the top-10 in the Division III Learfield Directors’ Cup.     CMS breaks into top-10 in DIII Directors’ Cup standings In the 2015-16 school year, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps broke into the top-10 in the Division III Learfield Directors’ Cup standings for the first time in program history with a tie for tenth place nationally. The final results were released by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) on June 9.

    Gurr earns NFCA All-American honors Sophomore pitcher Anna Gurr (CMC) earned All-American Third Team honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) at the banquet in Salem, Va. on the evening of May 25. Gurr is the third athlete from the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball program to receive this award.

    Athenas lose a heart breaker after battling in NCAA Tournament “The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat” perfectly described the day of softball for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday. The Athenas won the first game against the previously unbeaten Linfield Wildcats 3-0. This win forced the “if necessary” championship game against Linfield again in the NCAA Spokane Regional. In a dramatic and emotional back-and-forth game, CMS ultimately fell in a 6-5 heartbreaker in eight innings.

    Late rally not enough for CMS vs. George Fox in NCAA Regional The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team came up short, losing 5-2 to George Fox in the first game of the Spokane Regional in the NCAA Tournament. This marks George Fox’s first ever NCAA appearance and win. With the loss, the Athenas are sent to the bottom half of the bracket to face the host school, Whitworth, in an elimination game tomorrow, May 14 at 1:30 p.m. In the double-elimination tournament, CMS can still vie for a regional championship in the days to come.

    Softball NCAA Regional preview After winning the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team earned an automatic qualification to the NCAA Tournament. The Athenas were sent, along with Linfield and George Fox to Spokane, Wash. for a four-team regional hosted by Whitworth. Consistent with the NCAA’s regional rankings, CMS earned the No. 1 seed followed by No. 2 Whitworth, No. 3 Linfield, and No. 4 George Fox.

    Softball sent to Whitworth in Spokane, Wash. to face George Fox in NCAA Regional In the NCAA Selection Show on Monday morning, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team learned they are headed to Whitworth University in Spokane, Wash. to face George Fox University in the NCAA Regional. The NCAA released the field of 62 teams that were divided into 14 four-team regionals and two three-team regionals.

    Athenas win program’s fourth SCIAC Tournament Championship After two convincing wins yesterday, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team was primed for a rematch with the University of La Verne for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament title. In front of a large crowd and in championship atmosphere, the Athenas delivered and won the program’s fourth tournament championship in five years with the 4-2 victory over the Leopards.

    Roberts goes deep three times as Athenas advance to tournament championship game The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team won both games in the first day of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament in decisive fashion beating Redlands 9-1 and La Verne 10-1 (both in five innings). Staying in the top half of the bracket, CMS advances to the championship game tomorrow, May 7 at 1:30 p.m. Senior Carlene Roberts (CMC) had the best day of her career with three home runs and five RBI over both games.

    Softball SCIAC Tournament Preview The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team earned the No. 2 seed going into the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament with a 24-4 record during regular season play. The University of La Verne posted a 25-3 record for the No. 1 seed and hosting privileges at the Campus West Softball Field. The final two teams to round out the tournament are No. 3 seed Redlands (16-12) and No. 4 seed Whittier (12-16).

Before the game, head coach Betsy Hipple honored the six graduating seniors: Shannon O’Neill (CMC), Carlene Roberts (CMC), Tara Robinson (CMC), Molly Rubidoux (CMC), Katie Savard (CMC) and Janelle Shiozaki (CMC). During their careers, the seniors have overall record of 123-50-1 so far.
