The CMS women's basketball team won the La Sierra Tournament over the weekend. They defeated Hiram College 51-48 on Saturday and beat tournament host La Sierra University 55-45 on Sunday. Jocelyn Woolsey (SO, Piedmont) was named the tournament MVP after scoring 28 points to go along with 12 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals in the two games while shooting over 50% from the field and from behind the three point line. CMS is now 5-5 overall.
CMS was led by freshman centers Jennifer Osgood (Vashon, WA) and Cameron Hanson (Rockville, MD) in the opening game. Osgood had 14 points and Hanson had 10 points to go along with Woolsey's nine. The Athenas built a 12 point second half lead after being tied at halftime and then held on for the three point victory.
Woolsey had 19 points and nine rebounds in the championship game. CMS overcame a three point halftime deficit by holding La Sierra to 7-34 second half shooting including 0-13 on three-pointers. Lana Young (SR, Honolulu, HI) had 12 points and seven rebounds while Johnelle Parsons (JR, Half Moon Bay) had eight points and eight rebounds.
CMS' next game is at Chapman University on Friday, January 5 at 5:00. The team begins SCIAC play on Thursday, January 11 at La Verne.
