The women's basketball team overcame a sloppy first half to defeat the University of Redlands 62-56 on Thursday evening. The win improved their record to 7-7 overall and 2-1 (t2nd) in SCIAC play while Redlands dropped to 7-6 and 0-3 (8th).
CMS shot just 6-19 from the field and had 14 turnovers in the first half and trailed by nine with four and half minutes remaining. The team rallied defensively and held Redlands scoreless for almost seven minutes while scoring 11 points. The Bulldogs were 0-6 and had five turnovers during the drought. The teams went back and forth for the first part of the second half until Naomi Bagdonas (SO, Orinda) hit a three-pointer to give the Athenas the lead for good at the midway mark. Bagdonas also hit another three when Redlands cut the lead to one with under five minutes to play. CMS shot over 56% in the second half and made 10 of 12 free throws in the final 90 seconds to secure the win.
Lisa Scheele (SR, Cove, OR) led four players scoring in double figures with 13. Cameron Hanson (FR, Rockville, MD), Jocelyn Woolsey (SO, Piedmont) and Lana Young (SR, Honolulu, HI) all scored 10 points. Johnelle Parsons (JR, Half Moon Bay) led the team with eight rebounds and Young led with three assists. Valeria Katayama led the Bulldogs with 14 points.
CMS next plays Caltech in the first half of a home doubleheader with the men on Saturday, January 20. The women play at 5:00 and men at 7:30.
