Athenas Move Into Tie For First
The women's basketball team beat the University of La Verne 60-55 on Saturday evening and is now tied for first in the SCIAC with La Verne. CMS is 12-7 overall and 7-1 in SCIAC while La Verne dropped to 14-5 and 7-1.
The game was one of offensive runs by both teams. CMS led 18-10 in the first half. La Verne closed out the half with a 14-6 run which saw the teams enter their locker rooms tied at 24. CMS again jumped out to a eight point lead in the second half, but La Verne responded with a 16-4 run. CMS came right back with a 10-0 run keyed by a Naomi Bagdonas (SO, Orinda) steal and two Camille Sheffield (FR, Gambier, OH) threes. The Leopards reacted with a 10-2 run which tied the game with 1:30 remaining. The Athenas closed out the game 5-0. Jennifer Osgood (FR, Vashon, WA) blocked La Verne's final two attempts and scored what proved to be the winning basket.
Jocelyn Woolsey (SO, Piedmont) led CMS with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds as well as a team-high five assists. Lana Young (SR, Honolulu, HI) added 10 points. Bagdonas led the team with three steals. It was a solid team effort for the Athenas as nine players scored versus just five for the Leopards. CMS outrebounded La Verne 43-29.
CMS hosts Occidental on Thursday, February 8. The game is at 7:30 in Ducey Gymnasium.
