Athenas Overcome Second Half Deficit, Sagehens

CMS battled back from a 10-point deficit with 7:44 remaining in the second half to win at Pomona-Pitzer 58-56 on Thursday evening.  CMS improved to 3-18 overall and moved into a sixth place tie in the SCIAC with a 2-9 mark.  Pomona-Pitzer fell to 3-19 and 2-9.

After falling behind 54-44, CMS went on a 10-0 run.  During the run, the Athenas forced five Sagehen turnovers and Pomona-Pitzer shot 0-6 from the field and missed a free throw.   CMS, meanwhile, was 3-6 from the field and 4-6 from the line.  Sarah Beattie (FR, Quechee, VT) made all three baskets during the run.

Pomona-Pitzer finally broke their drought and scored with 39 seconds remaining to take their final lead.  Camille Sheffield (SO, Gambier, OH [pictured (in the teams' first matchup)]), who kept the Athenas in the game with 20 first half points, scored on a driving layup with 17 seconds left to tie the game and was fouled on the play.  She missed the ensuing free throw, but Jennifer Osgood (SO, Vashon, WA) grabbed the rebound and pulled the ball back out so CMS could take the last shot.  Sheffield drove the lane and dished to Osgood who was fouled with five seconds on the clock.  She made both free throws and Pomona-Pitzer turned the ball over as time expired.

Sheffield led all scorers with a career-high 25 points.  Beattie had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Osgood added 11 points and five blocks.

Deirdre Chew led Pomona-Pitzer with 13 points, but with only one in the second half.

CMS travels to Cal Lutheran this Saturday for a 5:30 matchup.  Their final home game, Senior Night, is against Caltech on Thursday, February 21 at 7:30.
