Conference play begins on Saturday, January 8 for the CMS Women's Basketball Team. Their first SCIAC opponent will be Occidental College, the defending SCIAC Champions. The two teams last met in the SCIAC Tournament Semi-finals, in which Occidental narrowly edged out CMS for a 72-69 victory.
Occidental has been picked to finish at the top of the league again, followed by Redlands, who return their entire team, and finally Cal Lutheran. The Athenas are capable of beating any team in the league and hope to contend for both the SCIAC Championship and the SCIAC Tournament Championship. The challenge will be playing consistently good basketball across all 14 league games. To compete for the championship, CMS will focus on limiting turnovers, denying other teams second chance shots and playing aggressive defense.
Redlands and Cal Lutheran rebound better than the top 25 teams in the nation and have very athletic teams. Occidental is a team with a lot of size and they have all the tools necessary to be successful – size, shooting and athleticism. Pomona-Pitzer and Cal Tech are also tall teams that can rebound well. Though smaller in size than the other SCIAC teams, Whittier and La Verne are quality teams as well. CMS is also smaller in size, but uses quickness, good shooting, teamwork and smart play to compete successfully.
The league title is definitely up for grabs as there is very even talent across the league, with each team bringing something to the table. It should be an exciting season.
