Athenas Raise Awareness Of Childhood Cancer
The Athenas basketball team wore 'Team Pearce' shirts for their January 29 game against Redlands and will wear them again in tonight's game against Whittier. Team Pearce represents the PearceQ Foundation which raises funds to assist families whose children are battling cancer. Funds raised by Team Pearce also help fund brain tumor research and create awareness of kids who are battling this deadly disease.
Frannie Hemmelgarn (SO, Seattle, WA) met Pearce Quesenberry when her high school team played in a basketball tournament in which each team 'adopted' a child with cancer and, at that time, Pearce was battling a brain cancer tumor. Hemmelgarn has maintained her friendship with the family and Pearce and her mom, Debbie, joined the Athenas for the Redlands game. The foundation was initiated by friends of Pearce's family to help with expenses incurred while she was undergoing treatment for brain cancer. Since Pearce is now cancer-free, the family decided to continue the work of the foundation.
