This weekend the Athenas basketball team kicked off its season in Chicago, IL. The team participated in the Lee Pfund Classic tournament at Wheaton College, finishing 1-1. Although the first game defeat was a disappointment, the overtime win against Illinois College made the team come home with heads held high.
Freshman point guard, Kim Scamman, took on her role well as she commanded the team and made her mark with 15 points and 5 steals. Shelby Barthold sparked the Athenas' comeback in the second half, with two quick steals and lay-ups.
Throughout overtime, CMS and Illinois College were back and forth basket for basket, until Kalika Tullock made the necessary basket to take the lead for good.
To top off the women's Chicago performance, Frannie Hemmelgarn was named to the All-Tournament team. Hemmelgarn lead the Athenas in points and rebounds in both games with 15 points and 8 rebounds in the first game, and 19 points and 7 rebounds in their victory over Illinois College.
