Women's Basketball Opens Season With Win
The CMS Women's Basketball team opened the 2012-13 season at home with a 66-60 win against the Eagles of La Sierra University on Thursday, November 15. The Athenas got out to an early lead, but the Eagles kept the game close as three of the Athenas were stuck on the bench with two fouls. The game was close throughout the first half with several lead changes. The Athenas went into the locker room up one, with a halftime score of 28-27.
The nip and tuck battle continued in the second half as the game was back and forth the entire half. Big shots from Kyra Ray (Seattle, WA) and Maddie Barnes (Seattle, WA) sealed the game in the final minutes. At the final whistle, CMS snuck away with a 66-60 win to be 1-0 in 2012-13 season. The Athenas were led by a strong performance from freshman Mara Falahee [pictured] (Bradenton, Florida) with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Kyra Ray paced the Athenas with 11 points on 3 of 5 from behind the arc. No stranger to CMS Athletics, Chloe Dobbert, who also plays on the tennis team, made her Athena Basketball debut with a perfect 5 for 5 performance to contribute 10 points. The heavy CMS crowd enjoyed having fan favorite, senior point guard, Aria Krumwiede (Scottsdale, AZ), back in action for her final season of NCAA eligibility. Krumwiede paced the Athenas with 7 points and 4 assists while knocking down two crucial free throws in the final minute. La Sierra was led by Natalie Hawthorne's 18 points and perfect 7 for 7 from the charity stripe.
The CMS Women's Basketball team returns to action on Saturday, November 17 to take on Whitman College at 4 PM in Ducey Gym.
