CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team closed out their early season schedule with a win over Northern New Mexico College on Saturday evening 59-45. All 16 of their healthy players saw time on the court and contributed to the team win.
The Athenas jumped out to an early six-point lead but then had to play through the Eagles' aggressive defense for the half time score of 33-26.
During the first half, senior Madeline Barnes was 5-7 from the field including two three-pointers.
CMS controlled the pace of the game and increased their lead up to 22 points late in the second half with free throws by senior Shelby Barthold to make the score 54-32.
Every freshman – Shaina Van Stryk, Alyson Young, Chantal Evett, Ty Wheetley-Amaya, Quinn Glosniak, Lauren Mott, Kris Brackmann, Claire Donnelly and Jai Dungca – got in the game and bolstered the Athenas' success.
Barnes finished with a game-high 18 points. Brackmann totaled eight and was 4-4 from the foul line. Barthold drained three of four free throws in her first attempts on the season.
The Athenas finished the game with a 14-point margin, winning 59-45.
CMS returns to action on Dec. 30 against Hamline at 1 pm. That is their first game in the CMS/Caltech Classic and will be played at Caltech. They return home the next day, Dec. 31, to face Grinnell at 3 pm in Ducey Gym.
