GREENCASTLE, Ind. - Defending national champion DePauw University pulled away in the second half for a 79-68 win over the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship on Friday, March 7 at Neal Fieldhouse. CMS ends its season at 24-4, the most wins in school history.

CMS hung tight in the first half behind its strong shooting from the field. CMS hit 54.5 percent of its shots in the first half and held DePauw to 44 percent in the first half. A layup by freshman Kris Brackmann at the 14:52 mark of the first half gave CMS an 8-7 lead. With the score even at 12, Ali Ross hit a three-pointer to give DePauw a 15-12 lead with 12:32 left in the first half. CMS kept the game close but DePauw led for the remainder of the game.

DePauw (28-1) turned a five point halftime lead at 34-29 into as much as a 20-point lead in the second half to earn the win and advance to Saturday's second round against Transylvania (Ky.). The second half began with the two teams trading scores, with two baskets each as DePauw led 38-33 with 17:35 left in the game. A 10-2 run by DePauw over a 5-plus minute stretch turned a five-point game into a 13-point DePauw advantage at 48-35 with 11:56 remaining after a three by Lauren Abendroth who had five points during the run.

While CMS outshot DePauw in the first half, the tables turned in the second half as DePauw hit 60 percent of its shots in the half and pushed its lead to as many as 19 points on a few occasions. DePauw had 10 three-pointers in the game while CMS had six, but CMS kept it close for much of the game by scoring 18 points off of DePauw turnovers.

Senior Madeline Barnes and Brackmann each had 19 points to lead CMS while junior Kimberly Scamman added 14 points.

Four players were in double-figure scoring for DePauw led by the 20 points by Alex Gasaway.
