CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team defeated the Occidental Tigers 11-10 Saturday afternoon on Parents Field. CMS is now 1-0 in SCIAC and 1-0 overall.
CMS took an early 4-0 lead, including two goals by Izzy Laterzo (4 total). Occidental rallied back with five-consecutive goals, to take a 5-4 lead with just under 10 minutes left in the first half. The Athenas and Tigers continued to trade goals until halftime as Madi Shove contributed three first-half goals (4 total), with a 7-6 CMS halftime lead.
The second half saw a strong defensive effort from both teams, which kept the game close as no side ever had a lead larger than two scores. Occidental's goalie Kristen Hee had an impressive eight second-half saves. Laterzo's final goal, with just under six minutes to play gave the Athenas a one-point lead. A final attempt by Occidental to send the game into overtime was thwarted by a last second save by CMS goalie, Sara Ginsburg (9 total).
The next CMS Women's Lacrosse game is away against Chapman on February 13, 2013, at 7:00 p.m.
