CLAREMONT, Calif. – The CMS women's lacrosse team won in excited fashion with a rainy double overtime win against Chapman University, 6-5 on March 1. The Athenas scored the final three goals of the game to win and run their record to 2-4 overall and in the SCIAC. The game was played on the campus of Pomona College due to the amounts of rain in the area over the last day and a half.
Chapman (1-5 overall, 1-4 SCIAC) started the scoring early with a goal in the first minute from Lauren Mah. CMS answered a few minutes later to tie up the score at 1-1 on a free play shot from Molly O'Donnell. The Panthers scored shortly after that and the Athenas followed that score with a score of their own from Christina Coffin, making it 2-2.
The Panthers Kristin Robbins had an unassisted goal with 4:16 to finish off the scoring for the first half and the lead, 3-2. When play resumed after the break, Chapman once again found the back of the net to take a two goal advantage just over half way through, 4-2. The Athenas kept attacking and broke through adding back-to-back goals from Hilary Slauson. Still down 5-4 with just under two minutes to play in the game, Anthea Weixel made a nice cut to the goal and connected to tie the score, 5-5 with just over a minute to play and send it into overtime.
The first overtime saw a couple shots come and go but the action picked up as soon as the rain really came down. With the start of the second overtime, the Athenas were on the move, had control of the ball, made a few great passes and again found a cutting Weixel, who shot and scored, giving CMS the 6-5 lead with 2:28 to play. The Panthers had one last chance to even the score with less than 10 seconds to play, but the Athenas goal keeper, Sara Ginsburg made the game winning save, held the ball and preserved the well earned comeback win.
CMS next plays host to the Stevens Ducks on Sunday, March 9. The game will be played on Parents Field, with the opening draw set for 1:00 PM.
