CLAREMONT, Calif., – The CMS women's lacrosse team lost their first match of the season to Plymouth St. 10-7. The Plymouth Panthers defense slowed down the faced past offense of the Athenas as they held them to just four goals in the first half and three goals in the second half. The Athenas are now 7-1 overall and 4-0 in conference.
In the first half the Athenas were the first to score as Joanna Heywood scored in just under a minute. The Panthers answered back with a 4-1 run including two goals from Megan Tingley that put CMS down 4-2. However, CMS answered with Mikaela Connell scoring with just under five minutes left in the half and Ellen Berkley scoring another goal just over a minute later to tie the score at 4-4. CMS looked as if it was going to go into the half tied until Molly Gleason of the Plymouth St. scored with just 8 seconds left on the clock to give the Panthers a one goal lead going into halftime.
In the second half Plymouth St. started strong as they scored two goals within fifteen second of each other just over two minutes into the half. However, Katie Hill of CMS mounted her own come back as she scored two goals assisted by Heywood and Connell respectively. The comeback fell short for the Athenas though as the Panthers offense produced three more goals in the second half with the Athenas only answering once to make the final score 10-7.
The Athenas were led by Hill and Berkley who each scored two goals. The Panthers were led by Amy MacDonald who scored four goals in the game.
The Athenas are back in action Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m. on Zinda Field as they take on the University of Redlands Bulldogs.
