Hagen Finishes Late Cross for 1-0 Victory Over Poets

On Wednesday night, the Athenas (7-3-3, 4-2-2) put up a ferocious fight, battling till the bitter end and coming out victorious against the Whittier Poets (3-7-2, 1-6-1 SCIAC), defeating them 1-0.  The Poets came out to a solid start, getting a few close chances on goal as they put forth a great effort and played with much heart.  But, thanks to CMS defenders, such as Rosa "the ninja" Ahn (JR, Cupertino), who saved a ball off the goal line, their efforts were thwarted, allowing the Athena offense to shine.  The Athenas had their fair share of shots and though they could just not manage to hit the right spot, give up they did not.

The second half began and ended with Athena domination, with the ball hardly crossing over into their defensive half.  There were many chances to be had, but the Poets hung on, until Laura Hagen (SR, Bellevue, WA), a fantastic finisher, finally put away a late game winner off a delightful cross from the very talented Lizzie Van Buskirk (SR, San Rafael). CMS outshot the Poets 21-5. Overall, it was a great effort from the CMS Athenas to send home the Whittier Poets in defeat.

The Athenas continue their SCIAC season with an away game against Occidental on Saturday at 1 PM.
