The women's soccer team traveled to Orange to play Chapman on Wednesday evening. Despited a perfect night for soccer due to the rain that stopped just before kickoff, the Athenas lost to the Panthers 2-1.
Both teams battled hard in the first half, but neither team could find the goal. Chapman had the run of play for the first 20 minutes, but CMS gained the advantage in possession over the final 25 minutes and started to apply some offensive pressure. That pressure continued into the second half and at the 56 minute mark, Lizzie Van Buskirk made a great pass out wide to Lauren 'Scooby' Phillips (pictured). Phillips beat her defender and then the keeper to the far post to put CMS up 1-0.
CMS had a few more opportunities, but were not able to get a second goal. With 12 minutes remaining, confusion by the CMS defense as it tried to step out for an offside trap led to a Chapman player behind the defense in the six yard box and a tying goal. The Panthers were able to net the game winner with two minutes remaining by winning a scramble in front of the Athena goal and converting.
CMS falls to 4-4-2 overall while Chapman, a fulltime SCIAC member beginning next season, improved to 5-5-1. CMS begins the second round of SCIAC play on Saturday at Cal Lutheran. Game time is 1:00. The Athenas are tied for second in the SCIAC at 4-2.
