On a beautiful day in Claremont, the Athenas women's soccer team honored their four seniors with a big win on senior day over the University of La Verne Leopards. The Athenas came out strong and dominated possession much of the first half. Although they did not put near enough shots on goal, they did have several nice buildups that were near misses when close to goal. Finally, in the 33 minute, CMS found the back of the net on a short range shot from Shauny Ullman after a series of passes found Ullman inside the box. CMS continued to pressure, but could not manage another goal and the game was 1-0 at half.
The second half saw the Leopards come out with renewed energy and they had more of the run of play through much of the middle of the second half. CMS defense held strong behind the solid play of center backs Sara Tweedy, Lauren Allen, and Sam Kunz, along with outside backs Laura Hayward, Megan Patterson, Kerry Moller, and Claire Shum. In the last 15 minutes, the Athenas took back control of the game and created several opportunities with great passing and crossing, but could not manage another goal. The game ended with CMS winning 1-0.
Congratulations to our four seniors who were honored prior to the start of today's game: Annie Belanger (pictured), Jen Najjar, Madi Shove and Olivia Sylvester. The Athenas have a quick turn around and return to play Sunday for a non-conference game vs. St. Thomas (MN).
