Relay Team From CMS To Swim Across Long Island Sound To Raise Money For Cancer Patients
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Five swimmers from the
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swim team have
formed a relay team to represent CMS Athletics and Claremont McKenna College at the 26th Annual St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound Marathon on Saturday, Aug. 3. The event which raises money for cancer patients and their families, is a 25 kilometer (15.5 mile) swim across the Long Island Sound from Port Jefferson, Long Island to Captain’s Cove in Bridgeport, Conn. St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound Marathon, one of the nation's largest open-water swimming events, consists of amateur solo swimmers and relay teams.
Swimmers, boat captains and spectators are all part of the event which makes a difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families. More than 250 swimmers protected by a fleet of 100 boats will launch from Danford’s Marina in Port Jefferson, N.Y. starting at 8:30 a.m. The swimmers will take off from Old Field Beach and end at Captain’s Cove Seaport in the historic Black Rock section of Bridgeport, Conn.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps team of Jasmine Cooper, Quinn Markwith, Joseph Hinton, Conrad Shabb and Madison Gebhard are going to compete as a University Challenge team along with a non-swimming fundraising assistant, Hannah Hummelberg. Cooper is from nearby Trumbull, Conn. All of the swimmers are currently in the process of fundraising for this event.
St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound’s mission is to:
- Break down barriers to access for cancer screening and prevention programs
- Provide education on minimizing risks for cancer
- Provide assistance to cancer patients with services that traditional health insurance will not cover
- Help individual cancer patients and their families on a case-by-case basis with specific needs, so that patients can concentrate on feeling better and family members can concentrate on caring for their loved ones

St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound is a charitable grass roots organization run by St. Vincent’s Medical Center Foundation. The SWIM started in 1987 and provides cancer patients and their families with financial support and care for the needs that health insurance does not cover.
