CLAREMONT, Calif -- On a postcard perfect day, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimming & diving team hosted Chapman University and Occidental College in SCIAC action on Saturday, Jan. 19. The Stags beat Occidental 185 to 45 and Chapman 193 to 30, while the Athenas topped the Tigers 160 to 77 and the Panthers 192 to 49.
The Stags won all but one event on the day, going 25 for 26 in the double-dual meet. Diver James Stevick swept the boards, posting an NCAA qualifying mark on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 315.25. In the swimming events, CMS spread the wealth around, with 8 Stags winning races. Brett Berger (1650 freestyle), Patrick Shultz (200 freestyle), Joey Hinton (50 freestyle), Matt Valentine (200 IM), Jordan Lieberman (200 butterfly), Alex Poltash 100 freestyle), Tim Storer (200 backstroke) and Conrad Shabb (500 freestyle) were the winners. Additionally, CMS went 1-2-3 in both relays.
The Athenas were led by junior sprinter, Kristie Howard, who won both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events. Other Athenas who won individual events were Louisa Dunwiddie (1650 freestyle), Michele Kee (200 IM), Maya Kale (200 butterfly), Elsa Cheng (200 backstroke) and LillyBelle Deer (500 freestyle). CMS won both the 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.
"We know that Occidental is a talented and well-coached team, so it was nice to see the Athenas step up and rise to the challenge Oxy presented today," Coach Griffiths said. "It was our first dual meet versus Chapman since they've entered the SCIAC, so we're happy to come out on top against them, as well."
CMS will take on Sixth Street neighbors, Pomona-Pitzer, on Saturday, January 26, at CMS's Axelrood Pool. Diving will begin at 10:30 a.m. with swimming at 11:00. CMS will recognize its 15-graduating seniors prior to the start of the medley relays.
