The No. 8 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s tennis team lost to No. 9 ranked Middlebury, 5-3, on Sunday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
The Athenas fell behind early as the Panthers won the first two doubles matches. At number one, Kristin Lim and Jessie Huang scored a much-needed point for the Athenas with a 9-8 win over the Panthers team of Brittney Faber and Leah Kepping.
The teams traded points through the first four singles matches. Victoria Aiello, at number two, and Kepping, at number three, claimed wins for Middleury. Sarah Kukino and Chloe Dobbert, at four and five respectively, countered for CMS.
The match clinching point was decided at number one in the highly anticipated rematch of Kristin Lim and Lok Sze Leung. Lim took the first set 6-2, but Leung came roaring back to claim the second set, 6-0. In the third set, Leung maintained her momentum and won 6-2. Leung also defeated Lim this past fall, in the semi-finals of the USTA/ITA Small College Championships in Mobile, Alabama.
Jaclyn Smrecek was leading 2-0 in the third set, but the match was left unfinished due to rain (4-6, 6-3, 2-0).
The Athenas (9-3 on the season) will host two matches next weekend. These include No. 27 UC Santa Cruz on Friday, March 30, and Linfield on Saturday, March 31.
