Three Wins In Three Matches For Athenas Over The Weekend
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team won each of its three matches over the weekend, and nearly swept each of its matches in the process to move to 7-0 on the season. The Athenas defeated No. 18 University of the South 8-1 on Saturday and then returned to the court on Sunday and beat No. 15 Trinity (Texas) University and Case Western Reserve University 9-0 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
CMS 8, Univ. of the South 1 (Saturday)
Junior Abby Hayley pulled off an upset in the No. 2 singles match defeating No. 28 Jenny Liles 2-6, 6-4 (10-4) after losing the first set. In No. 3 singles play, Lindsey Liles registered the lone win of the day for the University of the South, defeating junior Crystal Lim 1-6, 7-6 (10-7). CMS won its remaining singles matches and all three of its doubles matches. The No. 3 doubles team of freshman Yvonne Likomanova and sophomore Sarah Kukino earned the closest win of the day, defeating Annie Veron and Julia Wood 8-6.
CMS 9, Trinity 0 (Sunday)
Senior Kristin Lim and Hayley opened the match in No. 1 doubles with an 8-2 win over No. 12 Mackenzie Knoop and Thavindra Ekanayake. Crystal Lim and freshman Caroline Ward earned a convincing 8-1 win in No. 2 doubles while Likomanova and Kukino earned another 8-6 victory.
In No. 1 singles play, Kristin Lim, the third ranked singles player in Division III defeated No. 6 Mackenzie Knoop 6-4, 6-1 in a top-10 showdown. Ward (6-0, 6-2) and junior Chloe Dobbert (6-3, 6-0) won in the No. 4 and No. 6 singles positions, respectively.
CMS 9, Case Western Reserve (Sunday)
The Athenas closed out the weekend with their second-straight sweep. Haley earned her second win over a ranked opponent in singles play during the weekend, this time a 6-3, 6-0 decision over No. 47 Erika Lim in No. 2 singles. In No. 6 singles, Kukino earned a tough 7-5, 6-4 win over Surya Khadlikar. Kristin Lim (6-3, 6-3), Ward (6-3, 6-0), Crystal Lim (6-0, 7-5) and Likomanova (6-1, 6-1) also had wins in singles play.
In doubles play, the No. 3 doubles team of Likomanova and Kukino earned an 8-0 shutout over Taylor Sweeney and Kat Evers.
