After opening loss, Athenas bounce back with pair of top-20 wins at Hen-Athena Classic
CLAREMONT, Calif. – After starting the Hen-Athena Classic with a tough loss to Amherst, the No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team responded with resounding wins over No. 18 Tufts and No. 11 Chicago at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center to close out the weekend at 2-1. CMS is now 9-6 on the season as it suffered its first loss of the year to a Division III opponent in Amherst.
Amherst 6, at CMS 3 (March 21)
CMS won one of the three doubles matches and narrowly lost the other two to start the match. The No. 2 doubles team of seniors Chloe Dobbert and Crystal Lim defeated Jennifer Newman and Zoe Pangalos 8-6. In No. 1 doubles, sophomore Caroline Ward and freshman Katie Kuosman were defeated by Gabby Devlin and Jordan Brewer, the defending NCAA Division III doubles national champions, 9-7.
Ward then defeated Brewer 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 in No. 1 singles and Lim registered the other singles win for CMS, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 over Pangalos.
CMS 8, Tufts 1 (March 22)
A clean sweep in doubles and wins in the top five singles matches got the Athenas back in the win column on the second day of the Hen-Athena Classic. CMS dominated both doubles and singles as the closest doubles scores were 8-1 in favor of CMS. Then in singles, the Athenas took all five of its wins in two sets, its lone loss – in No. 6 singles – came in a tiebreaker.
CMS 8, Chicago 1 (March 23)
Similar to its match against Tufts, CMS took all three doubles contests and the top five singles matches against Chicago.
Ward and Kuosman defeated Tiffany Chen and Megan Tang 8-2 in No. 1 doubles, Dobbert and Sarah Kukino got the win 8-4 in No. 2 doubles while Lim and Yvonne Likomanova won 8-2 in No. 3 doubles.
Ward, Kuosman, Dobbert, Kukino and Lim all registered wins in singles for the Athenas.
