Athenas Volleyball Opens SCIAC Play with Win Over Whittier
The CMS Athenas defeated the Poets of Whittier College in their conference opener Tuesday night. CMS dominated in games one and two, holding the Poets to just .042 hitting percentage to surge to 30-22, 30-12 scores. The Athenas hoped to extend their 3 year streak of 3-game wins over the Whittier team, but abundant substitutions in game 3 led to a loss of CMS momentum and despite strong play by setter Kristine Grigsby (Jr. CMC, Issaquah WA) and freshman outside hitter, Jenna Suttmeier (SCR, Issaquah, WA)who picked up 6 kills in the effort, the Athenas gave up an early lead and hit negative for the game, losing 24-30. An invigorated Whittier team took the floor in game 4, led by outside hitter, Shanell McMillen who finished the night with 13 kills, but CMS regained focus and despite a slow start, pulled away at 20 points to finish the match 30-21. Senior outside hitter, Alicia Freeman (CMC, Santa Barbara CA) and middle blockers Helena Bottemiller (Jr. CMC, Burien WA) and Camille Butts (Sr. SCR, Ontario, CA) each notched 10 kills. Freeman also contributed 13 digs. Junior libero, Greer Donley led both teams defensively with 27 digs, and Alex Harrison tallied 38 assists. The Athenas are 1-0 in SCIAC play and move on to face cross-campus rival Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Friday night at Rains Center. Match time is 7:30.
