CMS Volleyball suffered its first loss in 7 matches to #5 nationally ranked University of La Verne Tuesday night, falling to the Leopards, (30-28, 25-30, 25-30, 18-30). The Athenas played well in game 1, trading points with the Leos until the last third of the game when La Verne went ahead 17-24. Down 22-26, the Athenas went on a 8-2 run, notching 2 aces to close the game out 30-28. While competing hard in game 2, the La Verne squad upped its hitting percentage to .205 behind the play of senior, Jodi Lindsay who finished the evening with 21 total kills. Despite the offensive efforts of senior middle blocker Camille Butts (SCR, Ontario CA) who led the Athenas with 10 kills and freshman outside hitter Kendra Huff (CMC, Downey CA) who tallied 9, the CMS team slipped again game 3, losing both sets 25-30. Within reach of its 8th consecutive SCIAC Championship, the Leopards came alive in game 4 and though the Athenas were down only 3 points at 13-16, they simply failed to respond to La Verne's attack and scored only 5 additional points, losing the final game decidedly, 18-30. CMS drops to 9-3 in SCIAC play and will travel to Caltech Thursday night to close out the regular season. Match time is 7:30.
