The CMS volleyball team dropped a tough match at Ducey Gym Friday night to the University of Redlands. The Athenas started strong in game one converting on 11 serve receive opportunities and limiting hitting errors in the opening points, but a dogged Redlands team continued to put pressure on the Athenas' defense, and pulled ahead late to narrowly win 30-26. The Athenas came out with renewed energy in game 2 and a strong blocking effort by middle blockers Camille Butts (Sr. Ontario, CA) and Helena Bottemiller (Jr. Burien, WA) helped contain the Bulldogs' offense. CMS capitalized on the momentum change and captured game 2, 30-24. Game 3 was intense and close, as the teams traded points, staying within 2 of each other for most of the contest, but three consecutive CMS serving errors after their 25th point cost the Athenas valuable scoring opportunities and they fell 26-30. In Game 4, Redlands increased its pressure, setting a triple block against the CMS outside hitters, and rattling the passers with strong serving. CMS struggled throughout, notching just 9 kills, and totaling an equal number of hitting errors to finish .000 on the attack, losing the game 17-30. Camille Butts led the Athenas offensively with 14 kills on the night, hitting .375. Freshman outside hitter, Kendra Huff (Fr. Downey, CA) also recorded 14 kills, as did University of Redlands' Megan Phillips to lead the Bulldogs. Huff also chipped in 18 digs. The Athenas will resume conference play Saturday evening at Occidental College. Match time is 6:00.
