CMS defeated the Poets of Whitter College in a 3 game sweep Tuesday night to open the second round of conference play. The Athenas held a moderate lead for most of game one before the Poets tied the score at 24 and then pulled ahead 27-24. A CMS timeout resulted in a side out and brought junior libero Greer Donley (CMC, Leawood KS) to the service line, where she led CMS in a 5 point run to close the game 30-27. Alicia Freeman was outstanding from the right side with 7 of her eventual 13 kills in game one. Game 2 was also evenly matched until the last third, when a block by Freeman and Helena Bottemiller (CMC, Jr. Burien WA) distinctly shifted the momentum in favor of CMS. Ahead 21-19, the Athenas allowed the Poets just 6 more points in the game, winning 30-25. Game 3 was all CMS. Ahead 17-4, CMS gave up a run of 4 points, the Poet's longest scoring string of the game, and won easily 30-14. The Athenas scored 11 aces in the match, including 4 by Donley and held the Poets to a mere .018 hitting average overall. Junior setters Kristine Grigsby and Alex Harrison paced the offense, with 19 and 15 assists, respectively. The win leaves CMS in lone possession of 3rd place in the SCIAC. The team will host cross-campus rival Pomona-Pitzer on Friday evening (7:30 pm) and Cal Lutheran University (6:00 pm) on Saturday.
