Athenas Volleyball Head to the Windy City

CMS Volleyball split its matches in the Thunder Invitational at Wheaton College Friday and Saturday afternoons. The team faced off with DIII opponent, Lakeland College in a 5 set show down Friday. Set one was all CMS, as the Athenas went on a 5 point run on Jessica Waggoner's (So., CMC, Scottsdale AZ) serving. Waggoner finished the match with 5 aces in addition to her 14 digs. The team hit .538 with 16 kills to win the first set 25-15, but Lakeland tightened up its defense in set 2 and held the Athenas to a mere 7 kills, winning 25-19. Set 3 also went in favor of the Muskies 25-17, but CMS rallied back in set 4 behind sophomore middle blocker, Leanne Ringquist who picked up 5 of her 6 kills in the match and the Athenas evened the score at 2 sets apiece, 25-16. Falling behind in set 5, 4-8, the CMS serve receive never recovered and the team dropped the deciding set, 9-15.

Just 30 minutes later, the Athenas took the floor again, this time versus NAIA opponent, Judson College. The team came out strong, and went ahead early, capturing set 1, 25-16, but CMS hitting errors proved costly in set 2, and the team put away just 7 kills. Despite the poor offensive performance, CMS found itself tied with Judson at 23, before a Judson kill and CMS hitting error gave Judson the advantage and the Athenas were narrowly edged out 23-25. Set 3 was all CMS, as the team tripled its hitting percentage and allowed Judson just 10 points. Sophomore outside hitter, Jenna Suttmeier (SCR, Issaquah WA), picked up 8 of her team high 14 digs in the effort. Both teams came out aggressive in set 4, but the CMS offense settled into a rhythm and hit .316, led by setter, Alex Harrison (Sr., CMC, Tucson AZ) who finished the match with 7 kills in addition to her 36 assists. Middle blockers, Helena Bottemiller (Sr., CMC, Burien WA) and Jamie Matusiak (Jr., CMC, Tucson AZ) also added 7 kills apiece, hitting .367 combined, while sophomore opposite hitter, Angela Estrella-Lemus (So., CMC, Gilroy CA) finished with 10 kills and 13 digs.

Saturday, CMS returned to the gym to take on University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point. The Athenas controlled the match from the opening serve, led by middle blockers, Matusiak and Leanne Ringquist (So., CMC, Ben Lomond CA) who combined to hit .380 in the 3 set sweep, beating UWSP, 25-10, 25-7, 25-15. Match 2, pitted the Athenas against host team, Wheaton College. The Thunder beat the CMS squad earlier this season and the teams played evenly through sets 1 and 2, Wheaton winning the first, 25-23, CMS capturing the second, 25-22. The Athenas faltered slightly at the start of set 3, allowing an early 5 point run and never found its rhythm, dropping the set 16-25, before rallying back in set 4. Tied at 25, Wheaton sided out and finished the match with an outside kill, 27-25. Matusiak had 17 kills in the match and setter, Alex Harrison was named to the 7-member All-Tournament team.
