Athenas Volleyball Takes Three of Four Hosting Pacific Coast Classic
The CMS Volleyball team picked up 3 wins against West Region teams September 5-6 while co-hosting the Pacific Coast Classic. The team notched its first victory over Lewis and Clark College 3-1 Friday afternoon 25-15, 25-14, 19-25, 28-26. Freshman outside hitter, Sarah Marietta (SCR, Monument CO) was the only Athena scoring double digit kills with 16 to lead the team. Greer Donley (CMC, Sr. Leawood KS) dished up 21 digs in the effort as libero.
Minutes after the victory, the team squared off with non-region opponent Wheaton College, IL. Seemingly fatigued from their prior match, the Athenas looked sloppy throughout the first set, but kept the game close before succumbing 24-26. Set 2 was also a close pairing, and thanks to a 3 point run at 22-22, the Athenas managed to take the win 25-22. CMS faltered though, in sets 3 and 4 and unforced errors gave Wheaton the momentum to beat the CMS team, 17-25, 18-25. Jenna Suttmeier (SCR, So. Issaquah WA) and Marietta paced the offensive effort for CMS recording 13 and 10 kills respectively. Sophomore Jessica Waggoner (CMC, Scottsdale AZ) had 18 digs, and setter Alex Harrison (CMC, Sr. Tucson AZ) notched 87 assists in the 2 match effort.
Despite the loss Friday evening, the Athenas rallied back Saturday morning against #14 nationally ranked, Pacific Lutheran University (PLU). The first set was all PLU as the Lutes pulled ahead and never looked back, winning handily 25-15, but CMS reduced its hitting errors and played with more intensity in set 2, holding PLU off 25-21. The momentum in set 3 swung back to the Lutes as they captured the win 25-15, but a grueling 4th set effort by both teams ended with the Athenas ahead 34-32. The team went on to win set 5, 15-13 to upset the nationally ranked Lutes. Middle blockers, Helena Bottemiller (CMC, Sr. Burien WA) and Jamie Matusiak (CMC, Jr. Tucson AZ) combined for 17 kills. Bottemiller also had 3 blocks to lead the Athenas. Defensive specialist, Jessica Waggoner had 21 digs.
In the fourth and final match of the tournament, CMS took on Pacific University. Sophomore, Angela Estrella-Lemus (CMC, Gilroy CA) hit .370 with 12 kills to propel the Athenas to a 3 game victory, 26-24, 25-18, 25-18. Freshman Emily Hudson (CMC, South Pasadena CA) pitched in 7 kills and 12 digs. The win places the team record at 3-2. They will compete in the Cal Lutheran Invitational in Thousand Oaks this weekend where they will re-match with Chapman University in addition to play vs. CSU East Bay, Willamette University and UC Santa Cruz.
